Goto is an island which, through a series of natural disasters, was cut off from the rest of the world in the late 1800s. Its inhabitants toil in stone quarries and relax in the state-run brothels. There in no art, no science, no prosperity, but everyone is happy to swear allegiance to their sadistic ruler, Goto III. At a public execution, Goto’s wife, Glossia saves the life of a condemned man, Grozo, whom Goto pardons and adopts as his personal fly killer. From the day that Grozo takes up his new office, the island of Goto will never be the same again…

Two Puritan crusaders who are actually secret perverts rendezvous at a burlesque club on the Sunset Strip, with the intent of blowing it up. They hide a bomb that’s set to go off at midnight, and while they wait, they tell stories. One of the men, who is a cowboy, tells about a miner friend of his who was plagued by hallucinations of naked women. The other shares a story of how he tried to destroy an erotic photography shop across the street from his apartment.
In a small English coal town, aspiring artist Paul Morel sets out to break free of the difficult mining life that has hardened his father, Walter, and killed his brother. His wishes appear to come true when local art lover Henry Hadlock offers to send him to art school in London. However, Paul’s deep love for his kind but possessive mother, Gertrude, threatens to keep him from abandoning his old life.
Set in the 1960s, the film follows the lead character Kent, as he travels along the California coast. As he drifts, he recalls his former troubled girlfriend, Bobbi who committed suicide after he broke off their relationship. During his travels he meets up with different women. However, he moves along rather than stay put in hopes of finding a meaning to his life.

Censored by the Polish authorities, the film was reedited and new footage added by Skolimowski in 1981, merging an introduction in color shot at the time and the 1967 feature in his original B&W with a new director’s cut.
Idealistic young man supports the party and the new Yugoslavia’s communist regime, but soon gets involved in various political and criminal machinations becoming more and more confused about what’s right and what’s wrong.

The film deals with the infamous “Kommando 52”, which was active in the 1960s civil war in the Congo and was recruited mainly from West German men. Among them is the former Wehrmacht officer Siegfried Müller. Based on personal accounts and original material – backed by tape recordings of interviewed mercenaries and photos of murdered Africans – it creates a hard hitting historical document.
