Set during the World War I in a prison cell. A newspaper satirist, a safecracker and a clerical murderer have been loaded into a common cell until the investigation into their supposed crimes has been finished. The journalist takes copious notes on the situation hoping to publish them later as a novel. The writer catches typhus and in his feverish delirium is no longer able to distinguish between the reality and fantasy of his writing.

The film tells about the relationship between brother and sister, as well as their loneliness and the need for warmth. Most of the action takes place in a modest apartment, in a gray, shabby tenement house. He will take care of her – he will feed her and make sure that she does not run away. Children spend long hours alone. They are waiting for someone to come, perhaps for their parents’ return, or on the contrary – they would like to leave the apartment. Outside the window you can hear free-flying pigeons. The boy and his little sister look longingly at the door. Time seems to pass so slowly…
A dream-like story of a sleeping man whose body parts live their own lives at night to return to him in the morning – all except one leg which has chosen freedom. Its owner as well as a crowd of homeless men chase the leg, but it grows feathers and flies away as a bird. A grotesque tale with a poetic ending and with interesting music by Janusz Hajdun.
Jan has his own night radio show where people can simply call and talk about their own troubles. The station management does not share his compassion for lonely souls and think the show is useless. Jan has a wife with a drinking problem and a girlfriend on the side who does not understand him either. He becomes more and more irritated and eventually loses control of himself and ends up in a mental clinic.

Finally back on his feet after a lengthy sickness, Matt finds himself searching for more meaning in his life. Accepting a position at a summer camp for autistic kids, Matt struggles to determine the best method for dealing with his two campers. Matt quickly develops a friendship with Rachel, one of the other counselors. Through her, he meets mute camper Jessica, and they form a mysterious bond that provides Matt with a deep insight into autism.
Jan is a young assistant professor in chemistry and a workaholic, whose entire life is dedicated to study and advancement to full professorship. Anna is an unsuccesful science writer who turns to Jan for advice and human compassion in a critical moment of mental confusion and nervous exhaustion. Jan, absorbed with his career, remains immune to Anna’s clumsy efforts to pierce his defences. Affrayed by her ultimate plea for an embrace, he escapes to his own quarters. In the end Anna makes an unsuccesful suicide attempt and he visits her in the hospital.
