Requests (now open!)

Hey guys,

Feel free to write in the comments below which movies you would like me to add on the site.

Remember I can’t just upload any movie, there’s a number of “rules” that I need you guys to follow in order to “green light” a film, they are the following:

  1. No Region 1 DVD/Bluray of the said film is available to purchase online, if the movie that you want was released on DVD at some point but it’s currently out of print you can still request it but make sure to check not only Amazon but also eBay and see how many copies are out there for purchase, if you are unsure you can request it and I’ll give you an answer.
  2. For British films only make sure the film isn’t available on Region 2 DVD otherwise I will not upload it.
  3. The movie was released before the year 2006 (2005 is the limit).
  4. For foreign films I will only upload titles that are not available on Region 1 DVD, if the movie was released on DVD or Bluray but only in the film’s country of origin and without English subtitles then you can request it, if there is a Region 2/B release for such film with subtitles make sure it’s region locked (should say on the back) and not region free (AKA Region 0), in those cases I will not upload them.
  5. Also, make sure the film you want isn’t already available on Youtube (or if it is there it has to be a low quality copy), it takes me a lot of time to look for and upload each film and to end up seeing that it’s already up on YT it ends up being a waste of time so please check before requesting it here. Also, check out the WANTED films list, if the movie you’re looking for is listed there it means I don’t have it.
  6. NEW Last and probably most important rule, I will NOT be uploading films where any of the studios mentioned up next have been involved in the production and/or distribution of the requested film: NBCUniversal and all its subsidiaries, WarnerMedia (including everything from the pre-May 1986 MGM library), HBOTurner Entertainment Networks, RKO Radio Pictures, Monogram Pictures, Cannon Group, Milestone Films, Gaumont, Pathé & StudioCanal (including Canal+, StudioCanal UK and Arthaus). For this you can check sites like IMDb specifically in the “Company Credits” part, click on “See More” and it will show you the production and distribution companies involved in the film, if you are unsure you can always ask and I will tell you yes or no.

This last rule I just added I’m a bit bummed about it not gonna lie I hate having to do this and believe me I would love to be able to upload as many movies as possible for you guys but after all the issues and complaints this year that forced me to take the site offline I have no choice, I don’t even know if this will be enough for the copyright trolls to leave me alone to be honest but I’ve run out of ideas so please, if you’d like to see rarefilmm stay online I ask you dearly to follow the rules, let’s hope for the best, I think we will be fine from now on, fingers crossed!

1 request per user please, you may include a second film as an alternative if you think I might not have the first one.

Thanks.
Jon.

Thank you for your hard work. Amazing!

There are several films with the legendary Jean Gabin which still have never been subtitled into English… All of these titles are available on DVD (or VHS) in Europe, but do not have English subtitles:
    “Gloria” (1933)
    “Varietes” (1935)
    “Le Messager” (1938)
    “Pour l’amour du ciel” (1950)
“Tonnerre de Dieu” — there are DVD copies circulating, but only in very bad phonetic English (1965)
    “Pour un soir..” (1931)
    “Pour l’amour du ciel” (1950)
“La Sang a la Tete” (1952)– very bad phonetic English-subtitled version available online
“Coeurs joyeux” (1933) — I actually own a very good copy of this on a CD-ROM (but it doesn’t have any English subtitles)
“La Cas du docteur Laurent” (1956)
“Drapeau noir flotte sur la marmite” (1971)
    “Paris-Beguin” (1931)
    “Chacun sa Chance” (1930)
“Verdict” (1974) — Jean Gabin and Sophia Loren.

    Thank you!

Maybe there are some French-speaking rarefilmm fans who can help to subtitle some of them? (( can dare to dream!)

For subtitles I find the best site is:

      http://www.opensubtitles.org/ followed by https://subscene.com

If you can’t find subs in English (or your desired language) or you need to
resync, adjust or otherwise modify them, I use very good freeware:

      http://www.nikse.dk/subtitleedit

It will do automatic translations using Google which can range from quite good
to somewhat comical, but mostly you get the idea. To English, I find transations
from Portuguese, Spanish and Italian to be quite good. From Romanian not bad,
from French not so good (I think French is much more idiomatic). From Germanic
and Scandanavian not bad. In any case, you may not get the subtleties of the
original, but you will understand what’s going on.

If you are really desparate, there is a Python script which uses speech to text
libraries to create a subtitle file directly from the film, then uses
translation libraries (using Google) to translate them. (this part doesn’t work unless you register for a Google API key, so I use subtitleedit to do the translation as they recommend in the instructions below)
I’ve tried it and the results are reasonable. It drops some of the dialogue but it does handle a good part of it and will give you an idea of what’s going on. Sometimes the results are pretty good and other times not so much. But it is quick (about 5m) and easy, so give it a try. If the results stink you are no worse off.

Greetings. Back in the late 1970’s I saw this Brazilian Film in a theater in Mill Valley. The plot was that some evil developer was trying to buy all the real estate in this community to redevelop. The community revolted against this plan. I think boulders were rolled down the hill at cars? After they won the people partied; dancing in the streets. Any excuse, these people partied. After seeing this film, our friends and I would say, Let’s Bahia or party. Does anyone know the name of this masterpiece? or where I can find it with English subtitles?

For some reason I’ve retained the memory of a very positive review of a film called, (I think,) “Barnardo of the Mountains”, released sometime mid 1990’s. All I remember is that it was a partisan war drama so I’m guessing could be from Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy, etc.. Haven’t been able to find mention anywhere. Also just to reiterrate a request for “Les noces de papier” (The Paper Wedding) 1989 made for television Canadian film directed by Michel Brault with Genevieve Bujold. Thanks for all the wonderful work. Cheers.

Don’t know the title about this one, maybe you can help: I am looking for a movie about a couple on the run after having committed a crime. One scene takes place on a deserted beach. The guy gets shot (by mob hitmen?) standing by the sea, while his long-haired brunette girlfriend watches from afar, sitting in the dunes. The bullets make an eerie sound on the quiet beach. The guy falls down and the waves wash over his body. I think it is a French movie, maybe Spanish, definitely European. Probably 1990s. Thanks in advance.

Can’t remember for certain but I think this film used to be on here but it isn’t anymore. I am looking for “Johnny Trouble” (1957) with Carolyn Jones and Ethel Barrymore. I have been searching for this film but have had no luck. Maybe you can find it. Thank you so much for putting all of the time and effort into getting this site back up again.

Hey Jon, glad to see the website up and running again! I have too many requests to count, but since you requested 1 per user I’ll have to abide. I think the movie I’m looking for the hardest is Kidlat Tahimik’s “Who Invented the Yo-Yo? Who Invented the Moon Buggy?” As an alternative, based on the fact that you previously uploaded Before the Truth, I hope you have more Vojislav Rakonjac films available, mostly Zazidani (The Walled In). Nice to see you back! My request, and this might be an odd choice, but the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie has to be it. It is literally not available on any streaming service. It’s not available to rent on YouTube, there is no Region A Blu-Ray (there is a Region B, but it’s unplayable in USA), and the film is not owned by any of your listed studios. It was produced by Hollywood Pictures & Lightmotive.

It has come to my attention that a rip of the 1985 documentary Yama – Attack to Attack has shown up in some circles online. It’s about labour protestors in Japanese cities and it resulted in both of the film’s directors being murdered for their art.

I would like to humbly request this film, as it sounds like an important and underseen work that should probably be made more available. I imagine that’s what the filmmakers would have wanted.

    Thank you.

Welcome back! It’s so good to see you back providing such rare gems to people, like myself, who has a difficult time getting them because either they don’t show them on tv anymore, they aren’t available on DVD, or worse yet, they aren’t in their region, and speaking of such.

I am looking for a movie if you have it, or if you can possibly get it. The movie is called The Journalist-https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079374/ . It’s a 1979 Australian movie staring Sam Neill in it.

It’s only available in a region 4, to purchase, and on Vimeo, you can only get it if you are in Australia, or New Zealand. I’m in the USA with a region 1 DVD player. The movie is produced by Umbrella Entertainment, so I don’t know if that’s going to be a problem, or not for you.

Anyways, if you can get it, it would be greatly appreciated. Again, thank you so much for providing such rare movies which would otherwise be lost in the mists of time. Thank you.

Hello I never made any requests here before but I’m looking for various Colombian films. I’m from there and can speak spanish so I don’t need any subtitles in fact it be better without any cause it can get distracting. Anyway I have found many on youtube but there’s still many I can’t find or are on there in extremely bad quality or dubbed in english.

The following films are the ones I’m looking for mind you all the titles are in spanish if you need an wiki or imdb page I’ll try and help you out with links to any but anyway here goes: Canaguaro 1981 (on youtube but horrible quality), La agonia del difunto 1981, El dia de las Mercedes 1985, Mariposas S.A. 1986, Milagro en Roma 1989, Con su musica a otra Parte 1983, Funeral siniestro 1977, Area maldita 1979, 27 horas con la muerte 1981, Triángulo de oro aka La isla fantasma 1984, Extraña regresión 1985 (this one is on youtube but dubbed in english), La boda del acordeonista 1986 (sometimes label as 1)coming out im 1985 or 1988), Técnicas de Duelo 1988 (on youtube but terrible quality), Pasado el meridiano 1967, Bolivar so Yo 2002 (on youtube bad quality), El embajador de la India 1986, Golpe de estadio 1998, Te Busco 2002, Todo está oscuro 1997, De amores y delitos: Amores ilícitos 1995, Ayer me echaron del pueblo 1982, El taxista millonario 1979, Un hombre y una mujer con suerte 1988, Caín 1984, Colombia Connection 1979, Pisingaña 1986 (on youtube horrible quality), and Los niños invisibles 2001.

Sorry I asked for so many I just thought I’d take the advantage to ask as many as possible since the first time I found this site it was taken down 3 weeks later. Hopefully you can eventually find all of them. Oh by the way some of these are on youtube but not blocked in my counrty and I used a vpn and went through 40 countries but no luck with any of them but if they are in yours please let me know to see if my vpn will work if I set it to you country.

Last but not least I want to thank you for this site and for all the uploads you do. Right now I do not have any financial way to show my appreciation and I don’t when I will have any but if I ever do I will donate as much possible to make sure this site stay up. My request this time would be:
Kotoshi no koi / This Year’s Love (Kinoshita; 1960) [thanks to you I’m only missing two more of his movies after this!!]

Alternative pick: Natsukashiki fue ya taiko / Lovely Flute and Drum or Love and Separation in Sri Lanka (the two remaining Kinoshita films)

Welcome back, Jon! Thrilled to see you back. I’m looking for 1985’s Twice in a Lifetime. For a relatively recent Oscar-nominated film, it seems to have virtually vanished. All I can find is a very poor quality, foreign subtitled pan and scan VHS dub. I’d love to be able to see a nice print of this. Thank you!

OOPS! Sorry! I see this is also on your Want list. Any chance you have FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN (1980)? It stars Elliot Gould and, in an early role, Michelle Pfeiffer. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080714/

I simply can’t sleep until this film is found. North Korean movie from 1980’s by kidnapped husband and wife Shin Sang-ok and Eun-hie Choi. From all available sources, a legitimately good movie and the best of the director’s North Korean period.

Hello, there is a documentary titled “Movies are My Life” from 1978. It is a profile on Martin Scorsese. Directed by Peter Hayden. I believe this is when Scorsese was at the peak of his drug addiction. There are also interviews with De Niro, Jodie Foster, and more. It would be amazing if you could find this!! It has to exist somewhere. Thank you!

Is it cheating to request from categories instead of individual films?

    * Anything nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film that you don’t already have.
    * Anything nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film or Best Live Action Short Film that you don’t already have.
    * Any winners of the Palme d’Or or Short Film Palme d’Or that you don’t already have.

If that’s too broad I will request one specific film: Bob Godfrey’s animated short film “Great”, which won the Oscar, and which is extremely difficult to find.

    Hi Jon,
There is one film that’s my ‘Holy Grail’ and that’s Escapade (1935), Luise Rainer’s American debut. This probably falls foul of your non-MGM rule but thought it was worth an ask as the rights are no longer with them, Warner’s etc.

For a more possible option I’ve also been on the hunt for Doris Totten Chase’s “A Dancer” which was on TV in 1988 and did once get a VHS release but I’ve never found it!
