Requests (Closed)

Hey guys,

Feel free to write in the comments below which movies you would like me to upload.

Remember I can’t just upload any movie, there’s a number of “rules” that need to be followed in order to “green light” a film, they are the following:

  1. No Region 1 DVD/Bluray of the said film is available to purchase online, if the movie that you want was released on DVD at some point but it’s currently out of print you can still request it.
  2. For British films make sure the film isn’t available on Region 2 DVD otherwise I cannot upload it.
  3. The movie was released before the year 2006 (2005 is the limit).
  4. For foreign films I will only upload movies that are not available on Region 1 DVDs, if the movie was released on DVD or Bluray but only in country of origin make sure it’s region locked, some studios release them region-free and include English subtitles, in that case I will not upload them.
  5. Lastly, make sure the film you want isn’t already available on Youtube (or if it is it has to be low quality), it takes me a lot of time to upload movie film and to see that it’s already up on YT it ends up being a waste of time so please check before requesting it here. Also, check out the WANTED films list, if the movie you’re looking for is listed there it means I don’t have it.

Re-opening date will be announced soon, thanks for your patience.

    Hi Gregory.
I have almost all of them, I will start with “Furusato no Uta” (1925) and “Josei no Shori” (1946).

Please for next time stick to not more than 2 requests.
    Thank you.

Thank you for your hard work. Amazing!

There are several films with the legendary Jean Gabin which still have never been subtitled into English… All of these titles are available on DVD (or VHS) in Europe, but do not have English subtitles:
    “Gloria” (1933)
    “Varietes” (1935)
    “Le Messager” (1938)
    “Pour l’amour du ciel” (1950)
“Tonnerre de Dieu” — there are DVD copies circulating, but only in very bad phonetic English (1965)
    “Pour un soir..” (1931)
    “Pour l’amour du ciel” (1950)
“La Sang a la Tete” (1952)– very bad phonetic English-subtitled version available online
“Coeurs joyeux” (1933) — I actually own a very good copy of this on a CD-ROM (but it doesn’t have any English subtitles)
“La Cas du docteur Laurent” (1956)
“Drapeau noir flotte sur la marmite” (1971)
    “Paris-Beguin” (1931)
    “Chacun sa Chance” (1930)
“Verdict” (1974) — Jean Gabin and Sophia Loren.

    Thank you!

Maybe there are some French-speaking rarefilmm fans who can help to subtitle some of them? (( can dare to dream!)

For subtitles I find the best site is: followed by

If you can’t find subs in English (or your desired language) or you need to
resync, adjust or otherwise modify them, I use very good freeware:

It will do automatic translations using Google which can range from quite good
to somewhat comical, but mostly you get the idea. To English, I find transations
from Portuguese, Spanish and Italian to be quite good. From Romanian not bad,
from French not so good (I think French is much more idiomatic). From Germanic
and Scandanavian not bad. In any case, you may not get the subtleties of the
original, but you will understand what’s going on.

If you are really desparate, there is a Python script which uses speech to text
libraries to create a subtitle file directly from the film, then uses
translation libraries (using Google) to translate them. (this part doesn’t work unless you register for a Google API key, so I use subtitleedit to do the translation as they recommend in the instructions below)
I’ve tried it and the results are reasonable. It drops some of the dialogue but it does handle a good part of it and will give you an idea of what’s going on. Sometimes the results are pretty good and other times not so much. But it is quick (about 5m) and easy, so give it a try. If the results stink you are no worse off.

Greetings. Back in the late 1970’s I saw this Brazilian Film in a theater in Mill Valley. The plot was that some evil developer was trying to buy all the real estate in this community to redevelop. The community revolted against this plan. I think boulders were rolled down the hill at cars? After they won the people partied; dancing in the streets. Any excuse, these people partied. After seeing this film, our friends and I would say, Let’s Bahia or party. Does anyone know the name of this masterpiece? or where I can find it with English subtitles?

For some reason I’ve retained the memory of a very positive review of a film called, (I think,) “Barnardo of the Mountains”, released sometime mid 1990’s. All I remember is that it was a partisan war drama so I’m guessing could be from Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy, etc.. Haven’t been able to find mention anywhere. Also just to reiterrate a request for “Les noces de papier” (The Paper Wedding) 1989 made for television Canadian film directed by Michel Brault with Genevieve Bujold. Thanks for all the wonderful work. Cheers.

Hello Jon. I may be asking about a movie you are working on, since you have mentioned it in the past—Marie-Louise (1944 or ‘45). I think it is the first foreign-language movie to win an Oscar in any category (original screenplay). No particular hurry, just wondered if it was still on the way. Nick Jason

I saw you uploaded Codine (1963)! Thank you! Really appreciate you still uploading it even though it was a very old request.

If you’re still uploading films, then my next request would be Atraco a las tres (1962) by José María Forqué. Backup would be El arreglo (1983) by Fernando Ayala.

    Thanks again!

Thanks for requesting CODINE, I really liked it, not knowing anything about it besides its being directed by the great collaborator on early Resnais films!

    Hello, Jon.
Happy New Year and I hope you have managed to recover from the problems of uploading the films.
Please, could you tell me how long, you could put on the site the movie “Sarah (1983)”, which I asked for last year? I look forward to watching this movie. Once again, thank you very much for having achieved “Antoine et Sebastian”. It was a wonderful Christmas gift!
Hugs and continue with this wonderful website!

    Hi Jon,
I have two films which I would like to have with subtitles if you can obtain them. I have both but without subtitles and I can provide you with the films, if necessary.
Proshchaniye s Peterburgom(Farewell to St Petersburg) 1972 by Yan Frid. A Soviet film about Johan Strauss made the same year as the US version of Strauss The Great Waltz.
Le pays sans étoiles 1946 by George Lacombe. This is an early film with Gérard Philipe but surprisingly no subtitles available as far as I know

    Firstly thanks for the site!

    My two MOST WANTED are

ANGELS OF DARKNESS/DONNE PROIBITE from around 1954 with Linda Darnell, Giuliuetta Masina, Valentina Cortese and Anthony Quinn – about prostitutes whose brothel closes down.

THE NAKED BRIGADE from 1964 or 65 – Shirley Eaton as a bikini clad, machine gun toting partisan taking on the Nazi menace in World War two – and Amen to that!

On the basis of this description I’m happy to second the vote for The Naked Brigade 👍

Stage on Screen: The Women (2002)
This is an excellent production of the original version of the Clair Booth Luce play.
There was a DVD offered by PBS in the early 2000’s but that is long OOP. This was also on YT, cut up into 10 parts with terrible video and even worse, unsynchronized audio, but even that is gone.
Thank you for all the work you do.

    Hi Jon,

    Terrific site!

Looking for Morgen in Alabama, aka Man Under Suspicion (1984) by Norbert Kückelmann, starring Maximilian Schell. From West Germany. I have several resources at my disposal, including karagara and a guy in Europe with a catalogue of 85000 titles for sale, and none have this listed!!! It isn’t on any torrent site either!

If you can find it I’ll be incredibly gratified.

My #2 title – a backup – is Claude Boissol’s super rare 1960 technicolor farce 3 Etcs and the Colonel, aka Trois etc. du colonel, aka Tre eccetera del colonnello.

Thanks and keep up the great work!

The closest I’ve ever come is a 35mm print of this that was circulating on Ebay a couple years ago for about $200. I didn’t spend the money but I wish I had.

      Hi Nathan.
I might be able to find a copy of “Morgen in Alabama”, I’ll email you if I find it.
Also, please let’s not sell bootleg copies of movies here, I’m all against those kind of sites and so anyone trying to sell unofficial copies of movies that are requested here would be seen the same way.

I have two films this month which I would like to have with subtitles, if you can obtain them. I have both films but without subtitles .I can provide you with the films, if necessary.
Uma(Horse) 1941 by Yamamoto. This film was co-directed by Kurosawa and for some film experts should be considered as his first film as Kurosawa directed most of the scenes.
La danse de mort 1948 by Marcel Cravenne. This is a French film version of Dance of Death(Strindberg) with Erich von Stroheim in the title role

“That Girl From Boston” (1975) starring Alexandra Hay and Mamie Van Doren, directed by Matt Cimber, written by Robert H. Rimmer, cinematography by Dean Cundey

This film was completed but never released. A long shot, but stranger things have popped up on this very site, so I’m putting the request out there just in case somebody has it…

  36. September 5, 2019

Wonderful to see you back — it’s amazing how many requests you got in such a short time!

I’d love to find the first film made by Ed Hunt, who made the absolutely incredibly weird Flying Saucer movie Starship Invasions. It’s called Point of No Return and it’s from 1976. Here’s the IMDB link:

As a backup, how about the wacky Hong Kong feature, Snake Curse (She Zhou) from 2004. There’s a version dubbed in Hindi with no subs on Youtube, but it’s so insane that one hopes for a better version.

Incidentally, any idea where I could find the subs for the Czech time travel film Neco je ve vzduchu? it’s up on youtube, but so far no subs anywhere! And Czech is a language which is notoriously hard to autotranslate…

Thanks for all the great films! I’ve caught quite a few of your uploads on, and plan to watch yet more! Keep up the great work, and I’m glad to hear that things are going well enough that you can resume the requests! Thanks!

Hi, great to see you taking requests again, thanks for all that you do!

I’m still desperate to see The Dressmaker (1988) and the other requests I have previously made and am keeping my fingers crossed that they may appear one day, but I’d like to request another title this month, and that’s Downtime (1997) starring Paul McGann.

    Many thanks!

Glad to have you back, Jon! I am looking for the 1953 Rosemary Clooney starrer “The Stars are Singing.” This used to be on Amazon Prime or Netflix a few years ago, but now it’s nowhere to be found online. Thank you!

  39. September 6, 2019

Thank you so much for the work you’ve done so far! I ended up finding a film I hadn’t even thought to look for and was pleasantly surprised.
I’d like to ask for two other films of Assumpta Serna’s to be found, if possible. Her works can be very hard to find!

    Momentos Robados (Stolen Moments) (1997)
La Vieja Musica (The Old Music) by Mario Camus (1985).

I have a good chunk of her collection (so if you get any additional requests for stuff she’s in let me know), but these ones are either impossible to find or are very expensive. And I’ll take any film she’s in, really.

    Thank you!

Don’t know the title about this one, maybe you can help: I am looking for a movie about a couple on the run after having committed a crime. One scene takes place on a deserted beach. The guy gets shot (by mob hitmen?) standing by the sea, while his long-haired brunette girlfriend watches from afar, sitting in the dunes. The bullets make an eerie sound on the quiet beach. The guy falls down and the waves wash over his body. I think it is a French movie, maybe Spanish, definitely European. Probably 1990s. Thanks in advance.

I think there is one print of this film with English subtitles floating around the world, because the one I saw on celluloid 20+ years ago, and the version in the box set, although both looked waaaaaaaaaaay better than the YouTube version currently available, had English subtitles superimposed above subtitles in another language, possible Italian.

If you could find the OOP box set and put up “Insect Woman,” you’d be doing the world a favor. And in future, you could keep going with the rest of the set’s contents. Kim Ki-Young is one of the giants of Korean filmmaking who is barely known in the English-speaking world.

I want to thank you so much for the French version of “La derniere femme”. There is another Depardieu film that is impossible to find: “La nuit, tous les chats sont gris” (1977). Perhaps you or your readers know something about this film?
Btw: I have seen “La pupa del gangster” – on your “wanted” list – on YouTube. Dubbed in Russian, but better than nothing, i guess.

I would love to get a decent copy of Chan Kaige’s Yellow Earth. There are a couple grey market DVDs out there but the quality is poor.

Also, Heaven 6 Box by Oki Hiroyuki

    Thanks. Love the site.

With due respect to the closing on Sunday:

    Bristle Face (1964)
    Captiva Island (1995)

The former was first shown as a two-part episode on television.

    Hi Jon,

Here’s one held captive by Alex Staykov: I livets vår (The Springtime of Life) 1912.
As a backup, here’s one that was on the old site: Those Who Dance (1930)
