Basil Rathbone plays Canuto Perez, the ghost of a man who committed suicide in the sixteenth century. He has been living in the dungeon of a castle for 400 years, and he can separate himself from his skeleton, which walks and talks as if it’s a separate person. Perez was not a good man; he had spent his life taking advantage of innocent young women. He choose to commit suicide instead of accepting punishment for his crimes. Because Perez repented at the last moment before he died, God has granted him four chances to save his soul.

Prostitutes from Athens are transported by truck for the pleasure of the occupying Italian Army in this World War II drama. The 15 women are driven by a young lieutenant who gives a ride to a fascist major. Tension mounts between the two soldiers as the truck is attacked, and some of the women are killed. Love blossoms between one of the prostitutes and the lieutenant, and he encourages her to return home knowing he will never see her again.
Postwar Tokyo. Pin and Toku live in the squatter area of Kappanuma, also known as “The Ditch”. Pin and Toku are avid gamblers. They take in Tsuru, a slightly demented woman who has run away from a geisha house. In order to rip Tsuru off, Pin lies that he’s a student who can’t afford his school fees. Each of them has experienced a traumatic event which contributes to their particular enjoyment of becoming someone else in dramatic roles.
