In anticipation of Airport 34 years later, womanizing pilot Jack Gordon is called upon to safely guide his plane through a blinding blizzard. His task is complicated by a trio of crooks who are escaping from the law after pulling a jewel heist, and by a shady nobleman who offers Gordon a large amount of money if he will land the plane before San Francisco. In the climax, one of the passengers hijacks the plane, only to be foiled by — of all people — an obnoxious brat of a youngster.
Fed up with an escalating crime rate and an increasingly ineffective police force, blue-collar New Yorkers Willie and Cy join a citizen’s vigilante group. Their efforts to act as an auxiliary police force are comically inept, but director Ivan Passer lulls us into laughter only to catch us unprepared when he wants to play things in dead seriousness.
A maternity ward, staffed by sympathetic nurses, serves mothers-to-be from all walks of life. These include a happy mother of a large family; a secretly-married teenager who thinks their parents won’t approve of either their children’s marriage or baby; a woman who is trying for a living child despite a history of stillbirths; a showgirl who doesn’t want a child, and who is shocked to find she is having twins; and a convicted murderess whose husband is forced to choose between saving her or the baby.
In this touching tale, an amiable retarded delivery boy from Brooklyn works to help support his mother. Meanwhile his older brother keeps him safe from local punks; this sometimes creates turmoil for him as he must maintain a strong exterior to mask his love. While delivering his groceries, the young man often fantasizes about being Superman and marrying the young woman who works in a neighboring bakery.
Ingenious thief Dan has just cheated a mobster out of some stock in order to use it as collateral on a loan — and now he has to save himself by replacing the stock with the money its worth. In order to do that, he figures out a complex scheme to steal some diamonds from a display case in a museum, use them to get an insurance sum, and put the real diamonds back before his fake substitutes are found. He co-opts a few people to help him on this plot, and the action begins.
To help his actress girlfriend regain her confidence a Hollywood bigshot bankrolls a small budget film being made by a first-time producer and director pair. Despite the hand-to-mouth way it has to be made the film starts to come good, as does the off-set relationship between the actress and her unknown male lead.
Set in 1943 Scotland during World War II, Janie is young housewife married to a man named Dongal, 15 years her senior. As part of a war rehabilation program, Janie and Dongal welcome three Italian P.O.W.’s to work on their farm and Janie soon falls in love and enters into a doomed affair with one of the Italians named Luigi.
Five office friends meet up for a night on the town to celebrate the forthcoming marriage of one of them. As the night wears on and the drink starts to tell, they become more confidential in expressing their concerns and hopes.
